Where to Stay in Zanzibar: Pick the Right Base

For a first Zanzibar visit, choose one beach base and consider a short Stone Town stay if culture is a priority. The best place to stay is the one that fits your daily routine and excursions: look beyond the village name to the hotel’s access, facilities and surroundings.

Start with your daily routine

Decide whether you want to walk out for meals, spend most days at the hotel or take frequent excursions. Then choose an area and shortlist properties. A remote hotel can be ideal for rest but inconvenient if you want independent evenings out. A busy central location can suit sociable travellers but frustrate someone seeking silence.

When a Stone Town stay makes sense

Stay in town if you want to explore its streets at different times of day and avoid compressing everything into a road trip from the coast. Check access for your luggage, stairs and the distance from the vehicle drop-off point. Historic accommodation can have a different layout from a modern beach resort.

Stone Town is a cultural base, not a substitute for choosing a beach hotel. Decide whether to place it at the start or end of the trip according to your flight times and preferred pace.

Choosing a northern or eastern base

Use Nungwi and Kendwa as starting points if access to the sea and nearby activity are priorities. Compare east-coast properties if you prefer a tidal beach setting and a hotel that suits longer periods on site. Ask about actual swimming access, not just whether the property is described as beachfront.

For the detailed beach comparison, see our separate beach guide. Here the key decision is accommodation: room location, meals, transport and what you can comfortably do outside the property.

Questions to ask every hotel

Confirm room category, bed arrangement, air conditioning, water provision, pool access and any accessibility needs. Ask which charges are payable separately and which currency is accepted. Read the cancellation terms and find out what happens after a delayed arrival.

For an early flight arrival, ask whether a room is guaranteed or whether you will store your luggage until check-in. For a late departure, agree where you can wait and whether a shower or late checkout is available.

One base or two?

Use two bases when each adds something distinct to your trip. Plan the move before booking activities and allow for checkout and check-in gaps. With limited time, one well-located hotel and a planned day trip can be more satisfying than repeatedly packing. Request excursion quotes using the exact hotel name so pickup costs are clear.

FAQs

Should first-time visitors stay in Stone Town?

A short stay is useful if you want time for culture and walking. You can also visit on a day trip, but account for the road journey from your beach hotel.

Is beachfront accommodation enough to guarantee swimming?

No. Ask about tides, the actual frontage, access steps, currents and boat activity at the property.
