Best Beaches in Zanzibar: Choose Your Coast

The best beaches in Zanzibar depend on how you want to spend the day: start with Nungwi or Kendwa for convenient sea access, Paje for a lively east-coast base, and Jambiani or Matemwe for a quieter stay. Check the exact hotel frontage and tides before booking; a beautiful beach photograph cannot show you how far the water retreats.

Choose a beach by what matters to you

Think about three things before comparing hotels: how often you want to swim, whether you want restaurants outside the property, and which excursions you want to take. A quiet beach can be a poor match if you want to walk out for dinner every evening. A popular waterfront can disappoint if your priority is uninterrupted privacy.

Nungwi and Kendwa: start here for sea access

These northern beaches are useful starting points for travellers who put swimming high on their list. The tides still matter, and currents, boats and local conditions can make a particular stretch unsuitable. Ask the hotel about the beach immediately outside its entrance, rather than accepting a description of the whole village.

Choose Nungwi if nearby activity and a choice of places to eat appeal. Compare Kendwa if you want a beach-led holiday with access to the north. Check entertainment schedules and room position if you are sensitive to music at night.

Paje and Jambiani: plan around the tide

The southeast coast suits visitors who enjoy long shoreline walks and a changing seascape. In Paje, allow space for kite activity and use designated swimming areas. Jambiani is worth considering for a slower village-based stay. Neither is a promise of empty beaches or constant deep water.

A pool can be useful when the tide is low. Avoid walking across living coral or treating exposed reef as a paved path. Ask locally where walking is appropriate and wear suitable footwear.

Matemwe and Kiwengwa: compare the hotel as well as the coast

Matemwe is a practical area to investigate for a quiet northeast stay and access to Mnemba-area departures. Kiwengwa has resort options that can suit travellers wanting more facilities on site. Confirm the pickup location for any boat excursion: a tour name does not establish how far you will travel by road.

Book the beach that fits your route

For a short stay, one well-chosen beach base usually leaves more time to enjoy Zanzibar than repeated hotel moves. If you want Stone Town as well, consider pairing a town stay with one coast. FAQs

Which Zanzibar beach is best for swimming?

Nungwi and Kendwa are good places to begin your search, but check the exact hotel frontage, sea conditions and boat activity. No beach is safe for swimming at all times.

Can I visit Paje without staying there?

Yes. Build a southeast day around Paje and nearby stops, with pickup and return arrangements agreed in advance.
