Zanzibar vs Maldives: Which Holiday Fits You?

Choose Zanzibar for a beach holiday that can include Stone Town, spice farms and a mainland Tanzania safari. Choose the Maldives if the main attraction is your chosen island, lagoon and resort experience. Compare complete itineraries rather than assuming either destination is always cheaper or more romantic.
What will you do beyond the beach?
Zanzibar works well when you want variety on land as well as time at the coast. A visit to Stone Town adds the setting of a Swahili trading city recognised by UNESCO. A safari is a separate mainland journey with its own flight or transfer arrangements; it is not wildlife viewing on Zanzibar’s beach roads.
For the Maldives, start with the actual island and accommodation. A local-island guesthouse and a resort-island stay can offer very different experiences. Decide whether you want independent exploring or a holiday centred on the property before comparing room photographs.
Transfers change the holiday
In Zanzibar, match the airport transfer to your selected coast and arrival time. In the Maldives, check whether your accommodation requires a speedboat, domestic flight or seaplane connection. The official tourism information describes different transfer options between islands. Confirm the operating window and what happens if your international arrival is delayed.
Ask both hotels for the entire arrival journey in writing, including any overnight wait and the cost of the return transfer. A headline room rate is not a complete quote.
Compare like-for-like costs
Use the same dates, number of nights, room occupancy and meal plan. Add international flights, local transfers, required entry arrangements, excursions and cancellation terms. Treat complimentary-transfer promotions as date-specific offers, not standard entitlements. A Zanzibar safari can change the budget substantially, so price it as a separate line.
Privacy, swimming and expectations
For privacy, ask about neighbouring rooms, shared facilities and whether your beach is used by others. For swimming, ask about the reef, tides and designated areas at the specific property. Do not assume every Maldives island has the same snorkelling access or every Zanzibar coast has the same sea conditions.
Our recommendation
Pick Zanzibar if you would regret missing culture, food and a possible safari. Pick the Maldives if your shortlist is built around a particular island and you mainly want to settle there. If both appeal, the transfer plan and the available hotel on your dates are useful tie-breakers.

FAQs
Is Zanzibar cheaper than the Maldives?
It depends on flights, accommodation, meal plan and transfers. Compare itemised quotes for the same dates; there is no reliable universal price winner.
Can you combine a safari with Zanzibar?
Yes, but the safari takes place on mainland Tanzania and needs a separately planned route, budget and baggage allowance.
