What to Pack for Zanzibar: A Practical Checklist

Pack light clothing for the coast, clothes suitable for town visits, sun protection and the documents required for your route into Tanzania. If you are adding a safari flight, check its baggage allowance before choosing your suitcase; international and internal flight limits may differ.

Keep arrival essentials in your hand luggage

Carry your passport, relevant visa confirmation, insurance documents, accommodation address and transfer contact. Save offline copies where you can find them without mobile data. Include any essential prescribed medicine and supporting paperwork, plus a change of clothes in case your checked bag arrives later.

Use our entry guide to check the actual document requirements. A packing list cannot replace the conditions attached to your nationality or transit route.

Pack for both beach and town

Bring comfortable lightweight clothing and a cover-up for leaving the beach. For Stone Town and village visits, choose clothing that respects local expectations. The FCDO provides dress and cultural guidance. A light layer is useful in air-conditioned spaces, and comfortable footwear helps on walking tours.

Swimwear is useful at the beach or pool, but plan a separate outfit for sightseeing. A small day bag lets you carry water and the items you need without taking your passport and all your money on every outing.

Prepare for sun, rain and sea spray

A hat, sunglasses and suitable sun protection belong in an easily reached pocket. Bring a reusable water bottle and a rain layer that you can carry on an outing. A dry bag can help protect belongings during boat boarding, but do not assume it makes a phone or camera completely waterproof.

Ask the boat operator which snorkelling equipment is supplied and whether sizes fit your party. If you use prescription lenses or specialist equipment, discuss that before departure.

If your holiday includes a safari

Read the operating airline’s baggage rules for the exact booking, including bag type and any combined weight limit. Keep equipment to what you will actually use. Ask whether beach luggage can be stored securely if you return to the same accommodation; do not assume this service is available.

Plan charging equipment around the devices you carry and confirm compatibility with your accommodation. Keep batteries and electronics in the luggage category required by your airline.

Leave room for useful purchases

Avoid packing expensive accessories you will worry about during every activity. Keep room for legitimate purchases and check export rules before buying shells, wildlife products or similar souvenirs. Ask a qualified clinician about medical preparations rather than following another traveller’s medicine list.
