Is Zanzibar Safe? Practical Travel Precautions

No operator can guarantee that Zanzibar is safe for every traveller or every trip. Read your government’s current Tanzania advice, consider your own circumstances and choose transport and activities carefully. Practical preparation is more useful than relying on a blanket “safe” or “unsafe” label.

Check the advisory that applies to you

Read the whole advisory, including regional warnings, entry requirements and health sections. A warning about a particular mainland area is not automatically a statement about every part of Zanzibar, but a safari route may take you beyond the island. Review the places you will actually visit.

Check again near departure. Government advice can change after events or updated assessments, and your insurer may attach conditions to travelling against that advice. Use the links below as live references rather than treating this page as a permanent risk rating.

Plan arrival and evening transport

Agree airport pickup details with your operator, including a contact number and meeting point. Confirm the vehicle and driver arrangement rather than accepting an unexpected change without checking. For evenings out, plan the return journey before leaving your hotel and avoid relying on an unfamiliar walking route after dark.

Protect documents and valuables

Keep copies of important documents and carry only what you need for the outing. Ask the hotel about secure storage. Avoid leaving belongings unattended on a beach or boat, and keep a backup way to contact your accommodation if a phone is lost or runs out of power.

Discuss payment arrangements in advance and keep written confirmations. If an offer changes substantially at pickup, contact the booked provider before proceeding.

Take sea conditions seriously

Ask about lifejackets, boarding arrangements, supervision and cancellation decisions. Tell the operator about your swimming ability and relevant access needs. A trip should be postponed when conditions make it unsuitable; a paid booking is not a reason to ignore the skipper’s judgement.

For swimming, ask about the specific location, currents and boat traffic. Avoid interpreting a clear photograph or shallow-looking water as evidence of safety.

Consider laws, health and your own circumstances

Read official guidance on local laws and cultural expectations. Travellers whose circumstances may create additional risks, including LGBT+ travellers, should review the relevant government guidance before deciding. Seek qualified travel-health advice for medical questions, and make sure the insurance you choose covers the activities you plan.

Agree emergency contacts with your travelling companions and save them offline. If you encounter an emergency, contact the local emergency services and your insurer as appropriate.
